Class Goals and Outline

In this class, students will read various classics of Japanese literature and thought, including compositions from the Meiji era. Students will learn basic literary constructions and essential archaic vocabulary.

Eligibility

B1 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N2 in the JLPT)

Learning Objectives

-Become acquainted with Japanese classics, learn basic literary constructions and essential archaic vocabulary, and deepen knowledge of Japan's cultural foundations

Number of Classes (per week)

Fall term: once/week (1 period/week), 14 classes total 

Course Content

-Basics of archaic grammar (historical kana usage, particles,  auxiliary verbs, use of inflectable words)

-Diaries/records ("Tosa Nikki," "Rangaku Kotohajime")

-Essays ("Makura no Sōshi," "Tsurezuregusa," "Tamakatsuma"

-Narratives ("Uji Shūi Monogatari," "Kojidan")

-Stories ("Kojiki," "Taketori Monogatari," "Ise Monogatari," "Genji Monogatari," "Heike Monogatari")

-Chinese poetry, waka, haikai poetry ("Kokin Wakashū," "Wakan Rōeishū," "Oku no Hosomichi")

-Treatises ("Uiyama Bumi," "Gakumon no Susume")

Evaluation Method

Participation (80%): Attendance, reading aloud and presentations, participation in class activities

Final report (20%): A report, approx. 2000 characters, on a theme related to class content
