CP400: Intermediate Seminar on Japanese Culture (International co-learning classes)

Level 4 (Intermediate)

Class Goals and Outline

In this class, students will work with Japanese students on visits to the Miyagi Museum of Art in the fall term and the Sendai City Museum in the spring term. They will exchange opinions, and help each other on a project. They will work together on a single presentation, while sharing their values and ideas.

Eligibility

A2.2 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N3 in the JLPT).

Learning Objectives

1. By performing cooperative activities with peers of different languages and cultures, students will not only learn to express their own opinions, but also foster the ability to listen to the opinions of others, and deepen their intercultural understanding. 

2. In the process of preparing a presentation with people from diverse backgrounds, students will gain a multifaceted understanding of the artwork and exhibitions and reexamine their own values and ways of thinking. 

3. Students will learn how to cooperate with others through experience and gain problem solving skills. 

Number of Classes (per week)

Fall/spring terms: once/week (1 period/week), 15 classes total 

Course Content

This is a student-centered class focused on group projects. There will be periodic opportunities for students to present progress reports to the class and receive feedback from the other students and instructor. Throughout the course, each student will be expected to cooperate with the other members to complete the project.

Contribution to project/attendance (40%), presentations (30%), reports (30%)
