Class Goals and Outline

Students will learn to understand and use necessary grammar and vocabulary for comprehending coherent writing such as reports in specialized fields, academic articles, specialized books etc., and for listening, discussions, and presentations in university classes

Eligibility

B1 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N2 in the JLPT)

Learning Objectives

B2 level in the  CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education

Understand the necessary sentence structures/expressions, and when, where, and how to use them, to achieve the below goals:

-Learn to understand articles and reports on modern problems, talk about their opinions on same, and give presentations from their own point of view (listening, speaking)

-Learn to read relatively long texts with clear points of view within their own specialized field and ascertain their primary conclusions (reading)

-Learn to organize necessary information and discussions from Japanese sources on a wide range of topics, develop opinions on them, and produce cohesive writing (writing)

Number of Classes (per week)

Fall/spring terms: once/week (1 period), 14 classes total 

Course Content

-Reports and news

-Debates (argumentation)

-Suggesting alternatives and expressing opinions

-Describing changes, transitions, and processes

-Explaining reasoning, background, and ideas

-Summarizing

-Explaining data and graphs

-Describing causal relationships

-Generalizing from specific cases

-Academic writing         Etc.

Handouts will be distributed in class.

Evaluation Method

Examinations (50%): Oral presentation (15%), reports (15%), final examination (20%)

Participation (50%): Preparation, attendance, participation in class activities, homework
