Class Goals and Outline

Students will watch Japanese films (some of which do not have Japanese subtitles) made mainly in the 1970s and later. Students will deepen their understanding of Japanese society/culture and become capable of intimately participating in the Japanese-speaking community by acquainting themselves with the social, economic, and familial changes in Japan depicted in these films. Students will be asked to submit 6 reports on film content in Japanese. Grading will be based on these reports and a final report.

Eligibility

B1 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N2 in the JLPT)

Learning Objectives

-Become acquainted with social, economic, and familial changes in Japan depicted in the viewed Japanese films

-Deepen understanding of Japanese society/culture

-Become able to intimately participate in the Japanese-speaking community
