Class Goals and Outline

This class will provide students with the necessary kanji and vocabulary to read books and newspaper articles, and read and write reports and academic papers. They will increase comprehensive vocabulary and reading skills by translating this vocabulary into spoken language.

Eligibility

B1 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N2 in the JLPT)

Learning Objectives

-Acquire a wide vocabulary and be able to read texts containing frequently used common expressions

-Learn to convert between spoken and written language, and use each as appropriate to the situation

-Learn to notice expressions that convey identical content in texts and infer context

-Learn to aurally understand kanji and vocabulary during lectures and classes

Number of Classes (per week)

Fall/spring terms: once/week (1 period/week), 15 classes total 

Course Content

-Students will study kanji vocabulary and its characteristics, common expressions, and katakana words frequently used at university using coherent texts related to Japanese society and culture from a variety of fields.

-They will learn to pick up hints for reading from synonyms and antonyms.

-They will also learn to understand learned kanji vocabulary aurally.

Examinations (50%)

Participation (50%): Short tests, attendance, participation in class activities, homework
