Class Goals and Outline

Students will learn about the living Japanese language, and Japanese-style learning, through active discussions with Japanese students about social problems in the world today. They will learn how to express their opinions precisely to others, and form mutual understanding and networking skills that transcend differences in language and culture through groupwork with Japanese students.

Eligibility

A2.2 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N3 in the JLPT).

Learning Objectives

1. International and Japanese students will become familiar with intercultural communication through actively developing discussions on themes while learning conversation skills.
2. Promote intercultural understanding and understanding of their own cultures through cooperative activities, primarily groupwork.
3. Learn to gather/analyze information, presentation skills.  

Number of Classes (per week)

Fall/spring terms: once/week (1 period/week), 15 classes total 

Course Content

There will be weekly discussions of common worldwide social problems. A number of group discussions projects, and presentations of their results, will be held during the first term.
1st class: Explanation of class (class content, themes)
2nd, 3rd classes: Case study and discussion
4th class: Explanation of intercultural communication
5th-8th classes: Group projects
9th class: How to give effective presentations
10th-13th classes: Group projects
14th-15th classes: Final reports

Evaluation Method

Reports (30%), presentations (40%), contribution to discussions (30%)
