 Practical Japanese for Academic Research 5

Class Goals and Outline

Students will study practical skills for writing effective academic papers and giving oral presentations in Japanese. This class aims to give students the ability to give a 5-10 minute research presentation and write a roughly 3-page research plan/report in Japanese.

Eligibility

B1 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N2 in the JLPT)

Learning Objectives

(1) Learn to write papers in Japanese

-Write a roughly 3-page academic paper or research plan in Japanese

(2) Learn to give presentations in Japanese

-Be able to give a 5-10 minute presentation in Japanese 

Number of Classes (per week)

Spring term: once/week (1 period/week), 15 classes total 

Course Content

-Characteristics of written Japanese

-Requirements and structure of academic papers

-Writing papers (introduction, method, results, considerations, conclusion)

-Writing notes and citations

-Summarizing

-Giving research presentations    Subject to change.

Handouts will be distributed in class.

Evaluation Method

Participation (80%): Attendance, presentations, participation in class activities, homework

Final report (20%): Research report or research plan
