Class Goals and Outline

This class will examine what actions are necessary and desirable when dealing with people with different values in a multicultural setting, or suddenly faced with an unfamiliar situation. Building on the basics of intercultural communication (fall term basic course is not mandatory), students will explore their own potential by accessing a variety of senses, not just their intellect. The class incorporates a variety of specific practical activities, numerous discussions, contemplation, and outings. 

Eligibility

B1 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N2 in the JLPT)

Learning Objectives

-Learn about personal leadership

-Foster leadership qualities for a variety of contexts without relying solely on theory and analysis

-Learn and use new problem solving methods for existing problems

-Learn differences in leader qualities required in multicultural environments 

Number of Classes (per week)

Spring term: once/week (1 period/week), 15 classes total 

Course Content

-Intercultural communication and personal leadership (PL)

-What is personal leadership (PL)?

-General introduction to PL: 2 principles, 6 seminars, introduction to CMD and hands-on practice, crafting a vision

-Hands-on practice of 2 principles

-6 seminars

-Review and sharing

Evaluation Method

Participation in seminars is mandatory. 

Participation (40%), homework (30%), comprehensive evaluation (20%), quizzes (10%)
