RS550: Research Seminar 5 for DEEp-Bridge Students

Level 5 (Upper-intermediate)

Class Goals and Outline

Students will gain basic, practical abilities related to giving coherent presentations on their own majors and related themes. They will write reports and reviews in Japanese on documents they have read in Japanese. Special attention will be given to pronunciation.

Eligibility

B1 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N2 in the JLPT)

Only open to DEEp-Bridge students.

Learning Objectives

B2 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education

-Learn to read and comprehend information, ideas, and opinions from materials on specialized subjects

-Learn to ascertain important points of long, complex texts at a glance

-Learn to summarize and evaluate information and arguments, and write clearly and in detail about various topics in a specialized field of interest

-Learn to emphasize essential points, discuss important relevant supporting items in detail, and systematically develop arguments

Number of Classes (per week)

Fall/spring terms: once/week (1 period), 14 classes total 

Course Content

-Finding documents

-Reviewing documents

-Preparing presentation materials (outlines, slides)

-Giving presentations

-Asking questions

-Ensuring pronunciation is intelligible to native Japanese speakers

Handouts will be distributed in class.

Evaluation Method

Reports (40%): mid-term report

Presentation (40%): final presentation

Participation (20%): Attendance, participation in class activities, homework
