Class Goals and Outline

This class will explore traditional aspects of Japanese culture to deepen student understanding of the roots of modern Japan's society and mentality. In particular, it will focus on traditional Japanese arts that contain the suffix "-dō" ( way/path). The class will deepen the international students' understanding of Japanese culture, and provide them opportunities to experience it. To Japanese students it provides a chance to rediscover Japanese culture.

Eligibility

A2.1 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N3 in the JLPT).

Learning Objectives

-Gain basic knowledge of traditional Japanese culture

-Experience Japanese culture

-Learn to talk about the attractiveness of traditional Japanese culture in one's own words

Number of Classes (per week)

Fall/spring terms: once/week (1 period/week), 15 classes total 

Course Content

This class is composed of three parts: lectures, Japanese traditional cultural experiences, and review.

-Japanese paper

-Ceramics

-Japanese sweets making

-Noh theater 

-Japanese drums

-Flower arrangement

-Tea ceremony

-Calligraphy

-Incense

-Tanabata festival decorations

Evaluation Method

Attendance (30%), homework (20%), group presentations (20%), final report (30%)
