Class Goals and Outline

This class aims to enable students to write an approximately 6000-character paper, using a consistent style, through phased learning using discussion points related to the university system. Students will learn basic knowledge presented in class, expand their viewpoints by exchanging opinions with other students, and conduct studies on matters that concern them outside of class.

Eligibility

B1 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N2 in the JLPT)

Learning Objectives

(1) Knowledge: Learn about your university's characteristics through comparisons with other countries.

(2) Ability: Be able to express your own assertions, with supporting evidence, in writing.

(3) Attitude: Be able to ask constructive, beneficial questions about other students' presentations. 

Number of Classes (per week)

Fall term: once/week (1 period/week), 15 classes total 

Course Content

-First half: Students will write three one-page (A4) reports on the university systems in their own countries, and explain them to their classmates. They will also learn about the systems in the US and England during class.

-Second half: Students will select discussion points from the themes presented/discussed in the first half, and write an article on improving the university system. They will give midterm presentations and answer questions from other students, receive feedback from the instructor, and finally complete a proposal, roughly 6,000 characters long.
