Class Goals and Outline

Students will systematically and practically learn about differences and similarities in communication styles, values, and behaviors in Japan, other cultures, and their own cultures. Theories and mechanisms related to what occurs when people communicate with one and other will be clarified through seminars and discussions with Japanese students.

Eligibility

B1 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N2 in the JLPT)

Learning Objectives

1. Learn basic theory of intercultural communication.

2. Experience communicating with people from different backgrounds and adjust to different cultures through discussions and experiential learning with other classmates, including international students.

3. Experience cultural differences in person.

4. Have hands-on experience with Japanese culture. 

Number of Classes (per week)

Fall term: once/week (1 period/week), 15 classes total 

Course Content

A third of the classes will be lectures; the rest will consist of discussions and seminars.

2. Communication mechanisms: what is communication?
3. Verbal communication
4. Wordless messages: nonverbal communication
5. Invisible culture: values and cultural characteristics
6. Perceiving and contacting different cultures, intercultural understanding
