Class Goals and Outline

Students will gain a multifaceted understanding of Japanese culture through exchanging opinions on Japanese language usage and communication styles with Japanese and international students while deepening their knowledge of many world cultures.

Eligibility

B1 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N2 in the JLPT)

Learning Objectives

-Gain new perspectives on one's own cultural sphere (Japanese culture if the student is Japanese) by observing Japanese culture.

-Learn to recognize various communication styles among others of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and interact in a mutually considerate manner.

Number of Classes (per week)

Fall term: once/week (1 period/week), 15 classes total 

Course Content

1st Round (mainly textbook-based)

 Nani, te iu ka, yappari, ne and yo, yaru and morau, kono

 sono, ano, ha and ga, da and ja nai, mitaina, back-channel sounds

2nd Round (supplementary materials)

Greetings, person, role language, gender, dialects, expressions of consideration, nonverbal communication

Evaluation Method

Participation (80%): Attendance, group presentations, participation in class activities

Final report (20%): report, about 2 A4-size pages, on a theme related to the class
