Class Goals and Outline

Using Japanese songs as source materials, international and Japanese students will think about the Japanese language and culture, exchange their impressions and opinions, write essays, and sing the songs they are studying. Students will study the characteristics of Japanese culture and points of commonality with the international students' home countries/regions while learning about diversity in values and worldviews.

Eligibility

A2.2 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N3 in the JLPT).

Learning Objectives

-Learn about Japanese language and culture from diverse perspectives.

-Recognize differences and commonalities in values/worldviews among classmates with different linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and learn to interact in a mutually considerate manner 

Number of Classes (per week)

Fall/spring terms: once/week (1 period/week), 15 classes total 

Course Content

Students will listen to and interpret Japanese songs together, explain/discuss the questions and interpretations of the international students, and think about the culture and mentality underlying the songs. Students will sing the songs together by way of reconsidering/experiencing them. Songs will mainly be drawn from seasonal fall and winter songs, but also include school anthems and pop songs. A recital, in which all students will sing, will be held during the final class.

Midterm/final report (40%)

Participation (60%): Attendance, participation in class activities, homework
