Class Goals and Outline |

Reading Modern Japan in English and Japanese In this class, students will look at translated materials in "Sources of Japanese Tradition" (2nd edition) —a textbook often used in Western higher-learning institutions— in order to consider the concept of "modern Japan." They will then compare the original Japanese sources with the translations and discuss them. |

Eligibility |
|
Students with an A1 to B2 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N4-N1 in the JLPT). Students must have sufficient language abilities to read texts in either English or Japanese and discuss the contents using simple Japanese and English. |

Learning Objectives |
|
Students will learn basics of intellectual history research and the current state of "Japan studies" overseas while acquiring an intuitive understanding of the difference between "primary" and "secondary" sources. |

Course Content |
|
After hearing the course outline and a sample report from the instructor, students will select a historical document related to modern Japan from "Sources of Japanese Tradition." They will then find the original Japanese text, give a simple report on relevant themes, and discuss it in Japanese and English. The reports will be given at the beginning of each class by several appointed students, and provide the basis for discussion by the entire class. |
