Class Goals and Outline |

Modern Japan has aspects requiring interpretation that defy understanding or grasping, for Japanese as well as foreigners. In groups, students will investigate the state of Japan, its people, and its culture through reading and discussing modern Japanese literature, written in various generational contexts. Readings of individual works will be deepened through group discussion and presentations. |

Course Content |

(1) Students will
read Japanese literature and then examine their own reading (interpretation)
of it by writing about what they felt, thought, or remembered in relation to
it. |
