Class Goals and Outline

Modern Japan has aspects requiring interpretation that defy understanding or grasping, for Japanese as well as foreigners. In groups, students will investigate the state of Japan, its people, and its culture through reading and discussing modern Japanese literature, written in various generational contexts. Readings of individual works will be deepened through group discussion and presentations. 

Eligibility

B1 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N2 in the JLPT)

Learning Objectives

-Obtain ability to read literary works independently without relying on existing research
-Think deeply about the works by carefully tracing works and expressions and discussing them with other students
-Learn to recognize and respect different values and cultures among students with various backgrounds 

Number of Classes (per week)

Spring term: once/week (1 period/week), 15 classes total 

Course Content

(1) Students will read Japanese literature and then examine their own reading (interpretation) of it by writing about what they felt, thought, or remembered in relation to it.
(2) Through sharing this reading with others, they will investigate the various mindsets and values that the Japanese people (probably) unconsciously accept, then broadly and deeply consider the authors, Japan, its people, and its history.
(3) Each group will chose a work, give presentations on a number of themes, and hold discussions.
(4) Students will write short reports on each of the works after reading them.
(5) The students will play the game Bibliobattle during class. 

Textbook

Handouts will be distributed in class.

Evaluation Method

Attendance (20%), short reports (30%), presentations (30%), final report (20%)
