Class Goals and Outline

Students will watch television programs on Japanese culture and social problems and university lectures in Japanese to improve their listening skills. They will write summaries outlining themes and participate in discussions and presentations. Special attention will be given to pronunciation and increasing comprehensive Japanese skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing).

B1 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N2 in the JLPT)

Learning Objectives

B2 level in the  CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education

-Learn to understand the essential points and flow of argument of substantially and linguistically complex speech related to familiar and specialized topics spoken in standard Japanese

-Learn to understand most television news and current events programs

-Learn to summarize and evaluate information and arguments, and write clearly and in detail about various topics on a specialized field of interest

-Learn to give clear, systematic presentations, while adding relevant details without losing sight of the essentials

-Learn to answer questions relatively fluently and naturally

Fall/spring terms: once/week (1 period/week), 14 classes total

-Listening to and understanding coherent speech

-Summarizing and writing about heard content

-Summarizing and presenting on heard content

-Discussion

-Ensuring pronunciation is intelligible to native Japanese speakers
